Life in the Elizabethan era
It was the time of the Renaissance - new ideas in science and literature and all aspects of Elizabethan Daily life. Elizabethan Women wore gowns, hats, corsets, underwear, collars, ruffs and shoes and Elizabethan Men wore doublets, breeches, underwear, collars, ruffs, hats and shoes. Elizabethan Food and Drink varied according to status and wealth. In the early Medieval era meat was a sign of wealth. But as the population rose, meat became more available due to the improvement of agricultural techniques and inventions. The Elizabethan era also saw the introductions of different food from the New World.
During the times when plays were not completely outlawed, going to the theatre was the favourite activity of the masses. When disease attacked London, actors would travel across the English countryside, entertaining farmers. There were also many days devoted to feasting, such as Mad Day, Midsummer Day, and Ascension Day, when people would drink and make merry. Dances were popular, whether you lived in London or in a small town, and so was getting together at the local pub for sing-alongs. Music was an important form of entertainment during the Elizabethan era. Music was performed by musicians. Simple songs and ballads could be sung in villages and fields to make the tasks undertaken by the lower classes easier. Because everyone went to church on Sundays they would sing popularity of hymns and secular songs. The earliest Church organ dated back to to the 8th Century. Sport was increasingly getting more and more popular during the Elizabethan era. Some of the more popular sports and games included archery, bowling, dice, hammer-throwing, quarter-staff contests, quoits, skittles and wrestling. |
